Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 (AST1)

AST 1 is a snow safety program created by the Canadian Avalanche Association, designed to provide an introduction to many aspects of snow safety from avalanche terrain recognition to the intricate science of snow. It is a 2 day program and consists of a classroom day and a field day.

All certification handed out by Custom Outdoor Experience for the AST 1 is recognized by the Canadian Avalanche Association and is pre-requisite for any further avalanche training.

Agenda

Arrivals on the evening prior to course start

Day 1 - Classroom day: The following topics will be covered:
Reducing the Risk, Avalanche Characteristics, Recognizing Avalanche Terrain, The Mountain Snowpack, Recognizing Avalanche Danger, Winter Backcountry Travel, Avalanche Search and Rescue Methods, Single and Multiple Beacon search methods.

Day 2 - Field day: The following topics will be covered and practiced:
Transceiver Practice, Weather Observations, Snow Study Plots, digging test pits, recording layering, tests for weaknesses, Avalanche Rescue Scenario, Course Closures and Certificates

Instruction

Instructors of these courses are CAA (Canadian Avalanche Association) Level 2 and Level 1 Avalanche Technicians who have vast experience and knowledge in mountain environments. They have years of teaching experience and will do a great job of passing on their knowledge to all participants.
