Cams, nuts, hexes,
pitons... These are the tools
of the traditional rock climber. Virtually all multipitch and alpine rock
climbs require skill with traditional rock gear. This three day course is
designed for those already familiar with leading bolted sport climbs and who
want to take the next step in their development as a rock climber.
Participants in this
course must have completed our Sport Lead Course
or have equivalent experience. For those who are keen but have not yet
learned to lead sport climbs, this course is sometimes offered immediately
after the Sport Lead Course, click the link above to check dates. It is also recommended
that participant bring their own well fitted rock climbing shoes although COE
carries a selection of shoes available for rent if need be Arrive in the morning and meet
your guide and fellow participants. After a review of basic rope work and sport climbing skills,
the remainder of the first day will be spent looking at protection placement and anchor
construction utilizing traditional climbing gear. Multi point and multi directional anchors along with
complex equalization methods will primary focus of the first day. Days 2-3 will start off with
anchor building review and move on into traditional lead climbing techniques and practice. By the
end of day 3 students who can demonstrate confident climbing while placing solid protection
will have an opportunity to lead a route or two on traditional gear. This will
be at the discretion of your guide. We will visit two or three different climbing areas during the
course and may climb on both limestone and quartzite which offer a diverse
range of routes to choose from. Instructors
of these courses are expert rock climbers and ACMG guides who have vast
experience and knowledge in the mountain environment. They have many years
