Traditional Gear Leading Course

Cams, nuts, hexes, pitons...

These are the tools of the traditional rock climber. Virtually all multipitch and alpine rock climbs require skill with traditional rock gear. This three day course is designed for those already familiar with leading bolted sport climbs and who want to take the next step in their development as a rock climber.

After a review of basic ropework and sport climbing skills, the remainder of the course will be spent practising the art of placing gear and indeed leading some excellent gear climbs. We will visit two or three different climbing areas during the course and will climb on both limestone and quartzite which offer a diverse range of routes to choose from.

Participants in this course must have completed our Sport Lead Course or have equivelent experience. For those who are keen but have not yet learned to lead sport climbs, this course is sometimes offered immediately after the Sport Lead Course, click the link above to check dates.

It is recommended that participant bring their own well fitted rock climbing shoes although COE carries a selection of shoes available for rent if need be.
