Traditional Gear Leading Course

Cams, nuts, hexes, pitons...

These are the tools of the traditional rock climber. Virtually all multipitch and alpine rock climbs require skill with traditional rock gear. This three day course is designed for those already familiar with leading bolted sport climbs and who want to take the next step in their development as a rock climber.

Participants in this course must have completed our Sport Lead Course or have equivalent experience. For those who are keen but have not yet learned to lead sport climbs, this course is sometimes offered immediately after the Sport Lead Course, click the link above to check dates. It is also recommended that participant bring their own well fitted rock climbing shoes although COE carries a selection of shoes available for rent if need be

Agenda

Arrive in the morning and meet your guide and fellow participants. After a review of basic rope work and sport climbing skills, the remainder of the first day will be spent looking at protection placement and anchor construction utilizing traditional climbing gear. Multi point and multi directional anchors along with complex equalization methods will primary focus of the first day. Days 2-3 will start off with anchor building review and move on into traditional lead climbing techniques and practice. By the end of day 3 students who can demonstrate confident climbing while placing solid protection will have an opportunity to lead a route or two on traditional gear. This will be at the discretion of your guide. We will visit two or three different climbing areas during the course and may climb on both limestone and quartzite which offer a diverse range of routes to choose from.

Instructors

Instructors of these courses are expert rock climbers and ACMG guides who have vast experience and knowledge in the mountain environment. They have many years experience helping new climbers learn the skills needed to enjoy this great sport.

3 days: $500 + GST (=$525)

Add-on guiding days available for 1 guest/guide at $350/day and for 2 guests/guide at $200 each/day
