Just about every climb in the Rockies is available for guiding. Some of the climbs in our area are briefly described below.

Corner 5.8 route at Hidden Quartzite

Beginner Climbers

A number of excellent crags can be found along the David Thompson highway. Many of these provide excellent venues for teaching rock climbing skills. Virtually all rock climbing venues in the area were developed by COE guides over the last 10 years.
Kootenay Plains (5.4 - 5.12, single pitch)
A wide variety of climbs and easy access to the top of the bluffs make Kootenay a great area for first time climbers to learn the ropes. Whether you are a first time climber or a strong gym climber, there are single pitch routes of all grades. Kootenay also makes a great location to learn lead climbing techniques.
Hidden Quartzite (5.6- 5.11, single pitch)
This hidden crag offers some of the best single pitch crack and face climbing in the Rockies. Our guides have put years into cleaning and developing this gem. The views of the surrounding peaks can't be beat! It is now the best crag in the area to learn quartzite climbing skills as well as traditional gear climbing skills.

Abraham Slabs - 20+ routes

First Multipitch Routes

The moderate nature of these routes allows for much time to be spent learning and practicing multipitch skills and techniques.
Abraham Slabs - Unnamed (150m, 5.7)
Four pitches of moderate climbing on perfect slab limestone. If time allows, this route can be combined with one of the other great routes at Abraham Slabs.
Mt. Elliot - Liquid Corner (155m, 5.7)
Just right of the beautifull Peskett Canyon, this climb follows a series of huge corners up a moderatly angled limestone wall.

Ruff 'n Ready

Intermediate/Advanced Routes

Mt. Elliot - Ruff 'n Ready (200m, 5.8)
This natural line splits the lower butress of Mt. Elliot in 4 great pitches. It is more challenging than the grade may suggest. A nearby 5.7 route and another more challenging 5.9 route provide other good options.
Mt. Abraham - Yambraham (180m, 5.8)
The first of many potential lines on a huge East facing butress high on Mt. Abraham. The area has a similar feel to the famous Yamnuska cliffs, hence the name.
Mt. Wilson - Rub A Dub Dub, 3 Men in a Tub (220m, 5.8)
A large quartzite band on the East end of Mt. Wilson offers perhaps the finest multipitch rock climbing in all of the Rockies. This, the first route on the cliff, was first climbed by our guides many years ago is is still one of the finest. Other high quality routes from 5.7 to hard 5.10 provide a variety of options on this cliff.

Becky Tower Integral

The BIG Lines!

These routes are not for the uninitiated, they all require solid climbing technique and a high level of fitness. All big routes are done with a 1:1 guiding ratio unless both guests have significant experience following routes at this grade. These routes are alpine in nature but require no snow or ice climbing skills.
Mt. Abraham - Shoulder Route (III, 5.8)
A limestone alpine rock ridge with a dozen pitches of climbing and much scrambling leading to the summit of Mt. Abraham. The crux pitches are incredibly exposed. This is our most popular guided alpine rock route. The ability to follow 5.8 with boots and a pack is required.
Mt. Wilson - Becky Tower Integral (900m, 5.10 A1)
An extremely demanding route to the top of one of the most spectacular towers in the Rockies. Climb over a dozen pitches of limestone to reach the final Quartzite tower. This tower contains rock as good as anywhere on earth. The tower can also be reached more easily and quickly via a long hike up a talus gully to the left and is an excellent outing in it's own right. This route is only available to repeat guests who have proven their ability to climb difficult rock and endure long days.

Other Areas

COE Guides are based out of Nordegg, Alberta but frequently travel to other parts of the Rockies for guided outings. We also work as far away as the West Coast of B.C. or even California on occasion. Multiday rock climbing excursions to just about any region can be arranged. Depending on distance and number of days desired, the guests may be responsible for the guides travel and accomodation expenses. Please contact us to speak to one of out guides about arranging your trip.

Other Rockies Areas

Lake Louise - The Lake Louise area offers everything from excellent single pitch climbing to gigantic quartzite and limestone walls.
Jasper - Superb climbing areas of all sizes on both Quartzite and Limestone abound. Unlike the Bow Valley, climbers often have the cliffs to themselves.
Bow Valley - The Canmore/Banff area offers the most concentrated rock climbing in the Rockies. Legendary limestone cliffs such as Yamnuska and the East End of Rundle abound.

All guides are members of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides. They are expert climbers with ascents of some of the Canadian Rockies biggest and hardest rock routes under their belts.
