Advanced Skills Week

This full 7 day course of intense instruction and adventure will leave you with a basic skill and understanding level for all types of rock climbing. Starting with sport climbing and anchor building, we will progress to traditional gear climbing and multipitch climbing by the end of the week. The two multipitch days will be done at a guiding ratio of 2:1 to allow all participants to challenge themselves at their individual skill level.

What more than 7 days?  Sign up for the 9 day rock climbing combo and expereince all the above plus an extra 2 days climbing and the opportunity to further your skills in the areas you need.

Prerequisites:

Some previous experience and basic ropework and belaying skills are required to take this course. For those with no previous experience or who want a refresher, the two day Top Roping & Anchor Building Course can be taken on the weekend immediately prior to this course.

Sample Agenda

Day 1: We will head out to Kootenay Plains for a morning reviewing basic knots, belays, anchors, and climbing skills. In the afternoon we will focus on sport climbing skills and get everybody doing a bit of leading.

Day 2: Out to the Waterknot Wall for a full day of sport climbing. Some of the more advanced ropework needed to safely enjoy these routes will also be covered.

Day 3-5: Once everybody is comfortable with sport climbing skills, we will begin to learn the art of gear placements and gear anchor building. Using a variety of crags and rock types, everyone will have the opportunity to complete a number of traditional gear leads under the close supervision of COE guides. Some possible crags include: Boundary Bluffs, Hidden Quartzite and Rampart Creek.

Day 6+7: For the final two days we will split into groups of two guest and one guide for some multipitch adventures. The first day will be spent on bolted multipitch routes at Abraham Slabs where everyone will get the chance to lead on these 100+ meter climbs. On the final day the objective will be selected to meet the needs and desires of each group. Some possibilities include the incredible 250 meter quartzite cliffs of Mt. Wilson and the 200 meter limestone walls on Mt. Elliot. Routes of all grades can be found in the area.
