Always
wanted to try whitewater kayaking? Been in the pool a couple of times, but want
to get outside? It’s wet, wild, and wonderful so come out to COE for a couple
of days and learn the basics of paddling. If you have solid skills and prefer a
course with an emphasis on advanced learning and river running, please see our Advanced
Kayaking Skills Week.
Arrive
the evening before to meet your instructor and fellow participants. After a
home cooked breakfast we’ll head out to the lake to start “yakin.” We'll cover
safety, swimming, strokes, drills, bow rescues, kayak rolls and potentially
even have a full afternoon down by the river, learning basic hydrology. Sunday
morning we’ll be back at the lake developing our new skills, before attempting
an easier (grade I+) whitewater run. Don’t worry, for there are a variety of
different rapids which will challenge all levels of ability from the very
novice to those who are more experienced and interested in “throwing down” to
the next level.
Instructors
of these courses are expert paddlers, CRCA certified instructors, and Swift
water Rescue Technicians who have extensive experience and knowledge in,
around, and on whitewater environments. They have been working many years
helping new paddlers develop the skills necessary to enjoy this great sport.
