Guided Kayak Descents

Itching for some serious whitewater action? Our lead paddling guides have over 20 years combined experience on the river, having paddled across western Canada and the United States. If you want to engage in some white-knuckle, waterfall-hucking, canyon-shredding action, then COE could have the custom kayak adventure for you.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Any guests wishing to partake in the more difficult descents MUST demonstrate proven competency with COE guides. Guests are expected to arrive the day before and be available for skills refresher and accept possible screening based on individual skill level. Guests assume all risks associated with extreme paddling activities.

Local David Thompson Corridor Gnarly Runs

North Saskatchewan: A local classic, featuring famous grade 2 rapids like the Devil’s Elbow and the Brierlies! This is the perfect river to learn the art of river kayaking and to work on your skills.

The Blackstone: Negotiate technical and demanding grade 3+ creeky whitewater paddling through tight S-bends and over cartwheeling ledges.

The Bighorn: Step it up and throw it down; throw down some waterfalls that is! An edge of your seat, no holds barred huck-fest over a series of waterfalls up to 6 metres (20 feet) followed by a boulder-strewn canyon run to the highway. Expert up-and-down river safety provided by rope-ready ACMG cross-certified staff.

Mistaya Canyon: A classic descent down sustained 3+ whitewater, followed by a pulse-pounding portage to reach the drop-in and the lower canyon; a deep and gorgeous limestone chasm hollowed out by thousands of years of frothing Rocky Mountain river.

The South Ram: Unbelievable and unforgettable. A two-day, multi-reach descent with multiple waterfall drops, rappels over 60 foot waterfalls, and wilderness paddling like none other. Stuff your Thermarest and your sleeping bag in your boat, cause we’re going down the river.

Guides

All river guides are members of the Canadian Recreational Canoe Association, (or Paddle Canada) holding either Level 1 or Level 2 river instructor certification. They are also Swift Water Rescue Technicians, with hands-on experience in real situations. They are expert down-river as well as play-boating paddlers with descents of rivers up to grade 5+ across Alberta; as well as experience in British Columbia, the Yukon Territory, Oregon, Washington State and California.
